Im 32wks pregnant and have been told by my ob/gyn, midwife and doctor that no test is totally reliable. There are many different types of tests u can have, but alot of them are not recommended unless you believe there is a reason your child is more exposed to having certain illnesses.
1 example would be an amniocentesis - this is a big needle that is pushed through the uterus to the amniotic fluid and they take a sample of it out. The chance of miscarriage is as high as 20%..
This test is only done on women over the age of 35 or families who have high risk of Down's Syndrome.
Ive had 2 ultrasounds done, and ive only seen my baby once. I asked for another ultrasound not long ago and they have told me they wont give me one because i dont appear to be suffering from any illness and my babies heartbeat is strong.
As i said no test is totally reliable, including an ultrasound. Its totally normal for mother's to worry about whether their child is going to be healthy, but in most cases there is no need for all the anxiety.
Unless you have a family history of serious diseases i wouldnt worry too much. But if it totally consumes you see your doctor and let him know how you feel.
In the long run, just look forward to being with your baby. Im sure everything will be alright!

Nobody ever knows for sure; we don't begin to know all the genes for all the potential defects. In addition, conditions during gestation may create a defect that has nothing to do with the genes. You roll the dice and take your chances, but remember that defects are unusual, and most of us are born perfectly normal and healthy!

During your ultrasound. You can ask your doctor if you want the information. Most doctors offer the information and give you the options. But you will probably be cursed by people should you choose to terminate your pregnancy because of that. I hope you make the right decision. I hope you keep the baby as a gift regardless.

There is no way to tell 100% that your child will not be born with any defects. If you want 100% assurance then don't have children.

This is a disgusting question because it is inferring that if your child has some 'defect' then he/she is inferior, or not worth keeping alive or taking care of or loving.
