Interesting situation you propose.

I think about it from the angle of the family member being my mother or father and some of the 10 strangers being children. My fam. member would not want those children to die, they would be willing to give their life for them. So, that being the case, I would save the strangers.

Now that I think about it, if the superhero in me can save 10 people from a blazing fire, what the hell is one more....TA-DAAAA!

I have saved the day, my friend.

Thanks, this was fun!

The right thing to do would be to save 10 people, over saving one, but put in this position I would save my family, asked this in a bar or social setting I would say 10 strangers..right haha.

The family member. I would be influenced by my genetic similarity to the family member. Think if it were your mother and all yelled for help in the same way/volume. Who would you listen to? That takes care of the unconscious effect of the genes and the conscious decision made at the time.

If you don't save that one family member, you'll regret it the rest of your life. We will never know until we get to where the fire is and begin to hear the voice of the person we forgot to say "I love you" that morning.
