Volleyball is great! I'm 12 and I love volleyball! It shows you discipline, sportsmanship, teamwork, and a bunch of other things you would probably need later in life.

Depending on likes - softball or soccer - are the easiest and most readily available to start with at that age. From there - she can experiment with running track, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics if shorter of stature when she gets into middle school where the options really begin.

I suggest hockey, it is THE most difficult sport to master. it relies on balance, agility, hand eye co-ordination, timing.
most people might not think it, but the ability to pass or shoot a 5-6cm piece of rubber with a thing stick accurately, while trying to balance on 2 blades, AND watch out for the body-contact (which is strictly monitored in the kids leagues), is very challenging.
hockey also teaches teamwork and good sportsmen ship, as long as the parents behave, parents are usually the ones that get out of hand at kids hockey games
good luck :)

Any sport would be good, they all build confidence, independance, and charachter.
But if I had to say one I would go with soccer. It ties in all the important things you want from sports, physical activity, competitivness, team work, good sportsmanship, etc.... and it is the best sport out there!
