There are people who care about this, for sure. But the question is why don't "people" care about it. You are talking about people who don't care about cruelty to and abuse of PEOPLE, so what can we expect of them when it comes to animals?
People are remote from animals - they have no real understanding of them, and people are trained from infancy to disregard them when they in fact even meet up with them. Sure, there are pets, but is keeping an animal as a pet appropriate? Well, dogs have been bred to do work and to be human companions, but there are millions of people who don't understand their pets. They look upon them as they look upon toys or appliances.
It's the general alienation from nature and the general arrogance of human beings that is at the bottom of this.

PEOPLE are abused and tortured every day. Once we have that taken care of, we'll move on to other species.
There are laws against animal abuse, and some states have very specific laws about what conditions you can keep an animal in, ie: Horses have to have shelter, food and at least an acre per animal.
Unnecessary abuse or neglect, if reported, is usually taken care of faster than with people or children.
We also eat animals, and like it or not, they are a staple and the best source of nutrients for most races of people. That they are slaughtered humanely without chemicals is very important to their consumers.
There are a lot of people out there that do not believe that animals experience pain or emotion as we do. To some degree this is probably true, but people who don't think animals feel pain just need to be exposed to animals. Education and soicial pressure is probably the best way to go about it.

I care very much and lead by example. People should pay more attention because abuse and torture of animals can be a good indication of someone who is extremely violent (mentally ill) and a threat to all living things. In fact...most serial killers start with killing and torturing animals before they kill humans. So pay attention people. Even if you don't care about animals. If you see someone doing something like this..you should report it. You or your family may be next.
By the way I love animals and people. I do everything that I can to oppose any type of violence.

RoadPizza is a douche. Animals are not slaughtered humanely at all, and animals are not the best source of any kind of nutrients. That's ridiculous. And what in the hell does race have to do with anything?
I'm insane about animals. I love animals more than anything in the whole world. Just get out there and let people know about what happens to animals. I get in soooooo many fights because I stand up for animals. I, literally, had a room full of people mad at me for yelling at a guy who punched his dog in the face.
Also, many people don't know how badly animals are treated in slaughterhouses. It's all about evolution...some people haven't evolved and still think that they're superior. That's why we have rednecks and Bush-supporters. That's why gays still aren't allowed in the military or able to be married legally.
Just be above it. Never stop learning and never stop teaching.

Animals seem to be on the low end of the totem pole regarding their rights vs. say children. I always get asked the same question you are for animals why not children. My response is that children do have advocates working for them. so few by comparison to animal rights advocates. there simply is NO COMPARISON. Yet we must speak for the animals, we must pass bills, we must punish those that do harm. Until we have a better educated society that finds animal abuse repugnant we will always have the toss away society that thinks a living thing will somehow find its way in the world. It is truly an awareness problem that must be changed.

I agree, and I deepley Care about animals, and the fact that people are burning, and torturing there "beloved" pet's EVERYDAY.
Some people, not all that is, only care about themselves. But there is a good half where some people try to help.
I raise money to send to shelters all the time.

People need to stop complicating there lives. We need to get back to the basics then maybe they would care more about the little things in life. The priority of people is all wrong.
