Yeah, they cancel college classes for the same reasons they would cancel high school classes. But probably not a s regularly, and you will most likely have to make it up.

College Snow Days

2016-10-13 22:12:14 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Some, but not like in high school. I went to college in central and northern Michigan. I remember 1 snow day in 5 years of college.

I work near another Michigan university. They have closed once because of snow in the last 30 years. The time before that was about 50 years before then, when they had a new president from the south. The town got a little bit of snow, and this guy decided to cancel class without talking to anyone who knew how to deal with it.

Sure there are. Just because the students are older doesn't mean the school gets to risk students. In fact with some schools snow days are more appropriate. I recently graduated from a community college where there were no dorms, this meant ALL students were commuting to the school. If the college doesn't close then most often students will feel more obligated to go because the professor will be expecting them to be there.

Yes, but less often than with K-12 schools. Usually, it's a blizzard, at a college with lots of commuting students, as with community colleges.

Not at most residential colleges/universities.
You will find snow days at community/junior colleges and commuter colleges.
For example. I go to a commuter university - as long as the public transit is working, the university will remain open (per the Chancellor).

As always, these things will vary from region to region, country to country and state to state.

Mine only had one the whole time we were there. It snowed 24" in 6 hours, and was nearly a declared emergency. The only time before that was when Mt. St. Helens erupted 20 years earlier. Usually it's up to individual professors whether they'd like to cancel class or not.

Yes. Sometimes it's based on how cold it is (at my school it had to be about -40F) Other schools base it on wind chill temperature or whether or not they could get the snow cleared off. Ice storms will cancel school, but generally speaking, college is not cancelled anywhere near as often as high schools or elementary schools.

Yes they do, but some colleges are not the greatest at informing the students. The college I graduated from was very lax at letting students know if classes were canceled.
