For those who responded to my question regarding my starter, thanks.I replaced the starter 3 times within the last 2 days and when i start it,it still has that grinding sound like the teeth in the cone hasn't released.I even replaced it with a ford starter.could it be the ignition switch under the dash keeping the current flowing?I noticed a wire on the switch was spliced before.Alt,battaries, and solonoid on fender is new also.Hope someone can help me.Thanks......John

There are supposed to be shims between the starter and the mount.Little flat pieces of metal that look like the hole the starter fits in. You may not have noticed these shims when you took the starter off because they tend to stick on the mounting area. ! or 2 of them may have fallen off before you put the new starter in.
Trust me it needs those shims so the gear is the right distance from the flywheel teeth when the starters bendix twists the gear from the starter out to meet with the flywheel ring gear

sounds to me like your starter relay is sticking. It's mounted on the fire wall. Your positive cable from the battery goes directly to this item..it is also possible your battery is bad...has enough juice to start it but not enough to cause it to disengage.
