The average family in Japan:

Will have no garage
Will dry their clothes / blankets / towels outside
Will live in an apartment complex
Will take part in earthquake drills in their living areas
Will sleep on tatami mats
Will eat on the floor
Will not have any fires (like fireplaces) indoors--there are a lot of wooden homes in Japan and the U.S. fire bombed Japan in WWII. There is a large fear of fire.
Will take care of grandparents / elderly *in their homes*

Hope that's enough.

Regards,
