I read up on it once, It sounded hard and complicated with a big chance of failure because the males are known to kill the females (they are fighting fish) and their babies are hard to care for as well. So I seriously wouldn't consider it. Heres a website I found if you do want to do some research:

you call tell if the beta fish is a boy or girl by how pretty they are!!! the males have the really long tails that can be various colors and the females are just like brown or gray!!!

Just go to the store and buy more - they're only like 5 bucks a piece. They don't like eachother so it would be a long hard task to breed them.
