If you truly want this question answered, I recommend that you go to your local Police Dept. or Fire Dept. They will tale you what type of car-seat you need, and they will show you how to install it the proper way.

Any modern car has standard fixing points for baby seats, there should be a little baby seat symbol that shows you where to find the anchors. So you need something which is compatible with LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) anchor points.
I hesitate to recomend a specific seat though... but Recaro do child seats, which should be in keeping with a Beemer :D
How big is your three year old? The seat below is good for 80lbs which is just about what some of my female coworkers weigh (4'11" Chinese girls)

Just brought a Grayco one from Halfords - cheap at £39.99, it uses the cars 3 point seat belt so can be used in any car. It is fully adjustable with arm rests and cup/bottle holders, and when the child is big enough, can be converted into a booster seat - great value for money.
