I always liked the Die Hard movies.
1. Fill the 3 gallon jug
2. dump the 3 gallons into the 5 gallon jug.
3. Fill the 3 gallon jug again.
4. Use the 3 gallon jug to finish filling the 5 gallon jug. That leaves one gallon in the three gallon jug.
5. empty out the 5 gallon jug.
6. dump the one gallon of water that was left in the 3 gallon jug into the 5 gallon jug.
7. Fill the 3 gallon jug again.
8. Dump the three gallons into the 5 gallon just to make 4 gallons total.

Fill the 5 gallon jug.
Pour out enough into the 3 gallon jug to exactly fill it, leaving 2 gallons in the 5-gallong jug.
Mark the water level on the 5 gallon jug.
Empty the 3 gallon jug, then pour the 2 gallons of water from the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug.
Fill the 5 gallon jug back up to the mark -- it will now have 2 gallons in it.
Pour the 2 gallons from the 3-gallon jug back into the 5-gallon jug, which will now have 2+2 = 4 gallons.

Ok, let's see:
1. Fill the five gallon and fill the 3 gallon jug from this one...
that leaves you with 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.
2. Dump the three gallons and fill back with the 2 gallons.
At this point: 5 gallon jug = empty
3 gallon jug = 2 gallons of water
Fill the 5 gallon jug and add fill the three gallon jug with one gallon...leaving you with with 4 gallons into the five gallong jug.
Simple!

the difference of the 3-gallon jug and the 5-gallon jug is 2 gallons..
fill in 5 gallons of water in the 5-gallon jug and from the jug, you fill in the 3-gallon jug...
you should be able to get a difference of 2 gallons...
you can use the difference twice...
so 2 x 2 is 4...
4 gallons...

Fill up the 3 gallon jug, then pour it in the 5 gallon jug (5 gallon jug is holding 3 gallons.
Fill up the 3 gallon jug again, and pour as much as you can in the 5 gallon jug (the 5 gallon jug has 5 gallons and the 3 gallon jug has 1 gallon).
Dump out the 5 gallon jug and pour the remainder of the 3 gallon jug in the 5 gallon jug (the 5 gallon jug has 1 gallon, and the 3 gallon jug has 0 gallons).
Fill up the 3 gallon jug and pour it in the 5 gallon jug (the 5 gallon jug has 4 gallons).
What a waste of water.

You fill the 5 gallon up and pour it in the 3 gallon jug. You then have 2 gallons reamining. Dump the 3 gallons out and put the 2 gallons in it. Then you fill the 5 gallon one up and pour it into the three gallon bucket. Since ther is already 2 gallons in there, you can only pour one more in there, leaving the 5 gallon bucket with 4 gallons of water.

Time how long it takes to fill the 3 gallon jug and divide that number by three and times by 4 and you will know how long to fill the five gallon jug up to make 4 gallons.
