Watching television is a passive behaviour similar to some computer games, video games, watching soap operas, laying in bed just because. Any of these activities for too long (up to 4 hours) could definitely contribute to depression!
Sometimes activities like these can be used as a diversion from having to deal with day-to-day realities of life. It may seem soothing at first, but life needs to be attended to.
Unless it's part of your JOB (and I mean employment, paid or volunteer) to monitor what goes on in the world, or you've got the TV on IN THE BACKGROUND while you're going about other work efficiently (it's not distracting you from getting stuff done), I think watching so much news would definitely contribute to depression or agitated behaviour.
If your television watching is under control it's fine. If there's a big world event and you want to watch the news for up to 4 hours a day on a couple of days, that's okay.
But if you're not thinking about WHY you're watching, or your other duties are being neglected, or you're watching while not dealing with issues that affect you personally, that's when it starts to be a problem.
You have little control over what goes on in the news and feeling helpless is not conducive to good mental health. Depression and agitated behaviour are both definite symptoms of poor mental health.

Absolutely. Simply sitting in front of the TV for 4 hours a day can do that. The news is such a downer and also sometimes so complex that it just it too much for me. I CHOOSE not to let it in.
I love reading the news on-line, and about 30 minutes of CNN with coffee in the morning. That's enough. To sit there for 4 hours and take in all that world wide sludge could not be uplifting or mentally healthy.

As much as the news repeats, over and over, I don't think a person needs to watch it 4 hours to be depressed. You could watch the news 30 minutes at a time, 4 times a day and feel depressed.

I use to watch Fox and CNN and the whole lot of them for at least that length of time, if not more. Now I am down to just local news and I feel so much better. I do know what is going on in the world, without having to see it on TV.

It depresses me to watch 30 minutes of the news.

With the situation in the world today if you're not mildly depressed from 4 hours of the news, you need your head examined.
4 hours of news is enough to make the Pope suicidal.

YES! The news is nothing but a depressing mess! What is sick is the worse the news the more viewers there are. The only thing I watch is the weather.

4 hours a day is a bit much to have to hear over and over all the bad things that happen everyday. I think it could make a person who is depressed to begin with even feel worse.

I have no doubt whatsoever. The news is almost always focused on the bad things happening in the world and if you are bombarded with negativity for that long everyday, it cannot help but affect your attitude and mood.
