The two major political parties are the Democratic and the Republican Parties. Words like Liberal, Conservative, and Moderate refer to what a person wants his government to do, whether he wants a huge government or a smaller one.

Democrats can be Liberal, Moderate, or Conservative. So can Republicans. During the past 25 years or so, most Democrats have been Liberals, and most Republicans have been Conservatives.

Liberals generally want a government that does practically everything for the individual and the family. They are perfectly willing to enact higher taxes, and have an extremely large government, with lots of rules, lots of departments, and lots of employees, if that's what it takes.

Conservatives believe individuals and families are strong, independent, and can fend for themselves without a lot of help from the government. So they believe in a smaller government with limited powers and functions. They believe the government should do only those things that the individual and the family cannot do for itself. Examples are national defense and building roads.

The differences between parties can become a little confusing at times but the basics are: Conservative, believes in the government not controlling or interfering with people, Liberal believes in some government control of peoples behaviours and the economy. Depending on the time and the makeup of government both parties sometime behave at odds with their basic beliefs because they believe that this is the right thing for the country. Some Republicans can be liberal and some Demo crates can be conservative. It just depends on what the problem is they need to solve an any given time.

Believe it or not, it is possible to have a Liberal Republican, or a Conservative Democrat. Most people use hate to squelch their voices, however, rather than celebrating the fact that their party has diversity. The Republicans and Democrats, are parties with national platforms of political focus. The terms Liberal, Moderate, and Consevative are more idealogies and philosophies/approaches toward life. More Conservatives identify with Republicans, while more Liberals identify with the Democrats, but does that mean that those parties cannot house other philosophies? Absolutely not.

I believe it's because the Democrat Party has moved so far to the left many people have left it. I used to be a Democrat myself, but Democrats left me, I didn't leave them! I became a republican because we are a Constitutional Republic, but now I'm ashamed of some people in my own party who are trying to take it so far to the right, they are leaving me behind. This is why there is such renewed interest in being Libertarian! The more people I interview and talk to, I'm finding more are calling themselves fiscally conservative and socially moderate! In other words they are Libertarians and the biggest jump is younger voters under 35 who think Libertarians are cool the way Democrats used to be cool and Republicans wish they were cool. I myself am more Libertarian than I am Republican. I support the idea of marriage equality for instance and I don't see marriage being destroyed because of it. I'm far more concerned about the ton of debt we are piling up that will affect the younger people here on Yahoo Answers because they will be the ones to get the bill for our out of control spending by the Obama Administration.

Democrat and Republican are terms to define the political party whose views you most relate with. Liberal and Conservative are brief ways of letting people know how you typically stand on issues. What is probably confusing to you is that just because you are a Republican, does not mean that you are Conservative, and vice versa.

Typically, no one is 100% Democrat, Republican, Conservative, or Liberal. But in today's partisan society, it is just easier to put yourself in a category.

Anything, against GODS word and moral living, such as abortion, homosexual agendas, destruction of the family, removal of personal protection, premarital sex, divorce, ect.... This is what a liberal democrat stands for. Anyone who tells you different is either misled or a liar. That is why you here the term, Christian conservative, because they hold to these biblical beliefs and moral high grounds.
