Depends on what your goal is. Money? Fame? Or just being signed? If it's money or fame then the answer is a definite no. My husband has been in a band (Kwench.... hence my screen name) for several years. They are unsigned, but financially they are better off than many bands that we've played with that are signed. Many of the bands we've played with are only signed because they took the first thing that came along & generally we're talking about a label that doesn't have any financial backing. Therefore, the band may be "signed", but they are responsible for all of their costs, etc. As far as fame goes, you're only going to be famous if you're on the radio & most record labels must pay to get their artist's on the air. If the record label has no money then there is no air play. (Although it is illegal for labels to pay for airtime... they just find other ways around that). Good luck!
