I know that a cricket is a sign of good luck. I am not sure about the grasshopper, even though they are in the same family.

The grasshopper sang all summer while the ant stored food. Then, in the winter, the grasshopper wanted some food and the ant was like, no way! You should have stored it instead of singing! So Aesop didn't think the grasshopper was good luck--he thought it was lazy and foolish.
I think grasshoppers might be in little cages--I know I'd rather have a grasshopper than a cricket because crickets are noisy and annoying. But a grasshopper could probably chew its way through a cage made out of, say, bamboo or grass stalks. They have some tough choppers on 'em. I don't see why either of them would be good luck. Grasshoppers spit and jump in your face. But crickets can be used to determine the temperature if you count their chirps per minute and add fifty and...I'd just find a thermometer if I really needed to know. I'm not impressed with either one, myself.
But as far as folklore goes, I'll say...yes? I don't know. I do know crickets are roasted and eaten in Oaxaca, Mexico, among other places. Maybe grasshoppers are good luck because they jump away when you try to eat them. But crickets could be good luck because they chirp and throw their voices so you can't tell where the little suckers are so you can sic your cat on them and let her eat them so they shut uuuuuup! Rrrghghgaahghghh!
