Seems to me you have the definition of liberal confused with pro-activists persons. Pro-activism does not necessarily mean liberal. If that were true, anti-abortionists and anti-gun control protesters would be considered liberal.
I consider myself a FAR LEFT liberal because I am a constitutionalists. It is that simple.
If you go by the constitution, you would be pro-gay marriage, pro-choice, pro-gun, pro-free speech, pro-flag burning, anti-prayer in public schools, etc... all of which have been settled in the courts based on the constitution.
Always gets me when rightwingers say us liberals hate America when they are the ones that don't love the civil liberties within the constitution.

Yes, they do. Even less extreme liberals give liberals a bad name-- Their rhetoric tends to inflame certain people's opinions on how things should be. Liberals really need to learn how to express their policies in a way that appeals to the common person.
Examples-- class warfare (tax the rich, they don't pay fair share, etc.)
corporations are bad
you need to belong to a union, they're great (not always)
In general, and in reasonable terms most people on the left and right:
- Want to protect the environment
- Don't want to mistreat animals
- Want to see people treated fairly
- Want to help the poor
- Pay their "fair share" of taxes
- Want less government intrusion in their lives
- Support the constitution- all of it
But its all in how those things get done and how their expressed is what turns people off.

People who want to restrict gun sales or pass laws protecting animals from mistreatment aren't exactly what I would call extremists, can you clarify what you mean?
I'd say that the few crazy liberals wo claim crazy stuff like that Bush did 9/11 are much more unhelpful to the cause.

I think that extremists on either end give everyone a bad name.
Michael Moore is too far extreme right as a lifetime member of the NRA.

All extremists create problems. The Rush Limbaughs and the haters on the right are extremists, too.

All fanatics give any group they are affiliated with a bad name. You simply can't reason with someone who is foaming at the brain.
