I don't mean on of those all-in-one boxes with a little tv screen. I mean some serious equipment that will give me some control over how I sound.

Well your stereo receiver will dictate this. If your stereo receiver has an extra DVD or an "aux" audio and video input then you can hook it into that very easily. I have DVD 1 and DVD 2 on my stereo receiver and I have my karoake unit hooked into DVD 2 so when I'm ready to use it I just change it to that setting.

Yes, you can connect a karaoke player to your stereo just like you would add a CD player. The audio outputs connect to your amp/receiver with a dual RCA cable. The video output is a single RCA connection that can connect to the video in of a TV. Microphones can be plugged into jacks on the front of the karaoke player.

The important thing to consider is your stereo speakers. Don't even attempt to use surround sound satellite speakers. You will most likely destroy them with the live vocals. You will need to use heavy duty 2-way or 3-way stereo speakers or else purchase PA speakers designed for live vocals.
