To me, addiction always has a negative connotation. I think that addiction necessarily implies something about consequences. For instance, people bring up a sex addiction, which can be a very, very harmful thing. Plenty of people go out and have lots of sex without it being an addiction. However, if you're married and need sex so much and you aren't satisfied within your marriage, the addiction could tear your personal and family life apart.
In short, addiction always has negative implications. As a definition, addiction is the continual need to perform a behavior in spite of any negative consequences.

An addiction is a habit so strong that it cannot be given up. I guess you could say I am addicted to Yahoo Answers. Some addictions can be good.

An addiction is a physical or psychological dependence on something. It wouldn't be bad if you were addicted to chewable vitamin C tablets, since you can't over-dose on it, and it's very healthy stuff.

Not to Answers!
I got two violations this morning,
and if I wasn't addicted,
I would have flat QUIT!
They were uncalled for.
Of all the perverted,
absolute filth
and the undeniably sick
slimy characters on here,
and then 'they' gave me
a violation for asking
"What musical instrument do you play?"
Hello?
Anyway before the gestapo swooped down,
I got some pretty neat answers.

I think an addiction is compulsive behavior, and, therefore, no addiction - even if it is to fresh air and sunshine - can ever be a truly good thing as it will eventually cause you to compromise your values in order to fulfill it.

addiction means doing something at a rate that is beyond what others see as "normal" -- like EXCESSIVE drinking, smoking, masturbation, eating-- it is a compulsion that is so great that you cannot stop, even if you wanted to. on the conscious level, your mind is telling you to stop. on the subconscious level, you crave for it because it answers a NEED in you.
any form of addiction is said to be a form of escape-- you resort to it to escape some deeper realities you refuse to face head-on.
like masturbation is said to be an escape from childhood hurts of not being loved enough by the people around you. or like drinking can be an escape from the sadder parts of your life-- or a good mask to hide the insecurities you feel about not looking physically good and therefore you resort to looking tougher than you feel-- or it can simply numb that sense of being a loser in so many ways. it intoxicates you enough to "forget" some problems in the guise of pleasurable drinking. teenage smoking is an image-builder in itself, as smokers seem to look "cooler" than non-smokers-- but in reality you're slowly killing yourself and the people around you.
addiction needs professional help.
