I ask this because the music industry is a confusing world. I see artists with immense talent and musical virtuosity, yet nobody seems to know who they are or what their music sounds like. I also see artists with minimal amounts of talent that are showing up on Billboard's Hot 100. My biggest question is: WHY!!??

I think it may be a bit of both. Let's use The Beatles as an example.

There probably would not've been the Beatles had they not been influenced by the American rock n roll they grew up on. Rock n Roll that was part of *our* culture.

Fast forward - they go on to become the most influential rock band in recent history. & their influence extended outside of music.

They changed Everything.

There's music influencing culture right there.

It's about the media, it's a two way street, it goes both ways. The music industry tries to influence bands or musical artists to do what they think society will like, and due to the most popular genre of music at the time being. Kudos to the bands that stay true to them selves and continue writing music they want to write, instead of buying into what their record label wants. Artists with minimal amounts of talent are probably showing up on "Billboard's Hot 100" because they're portrayed in the media as "hot" or attractive looking, hense why they made it. Their voices are mostly editted and they have no musical inclinement whatsoever, and they're pretty much only for the money. =\
Thats my oppinion on music nowadays.
and I think it's bullshit.

yes it does, they both affect each other. the reason why you see people that do no have much talent in the industry is usually because they have sex appeal or they are famous. for example famous and not talent would be paris hilton, some of them are riding their parents money and celebrity example Hogans daughter brooke... then there is little young, he is only good at saying YEAAAAH, WHAT, WHAT, WHAT. OOOOK. a good example of his lack of talent is the snap your fingers song rap, call it what you want.oooook.
others are that lohan and duff girls. even the full house twins try to sing they can't but since they are famous they sell, why they are famous I don't have a clue but at least they have something to be famous for when it comes to behind the camera work.
there are so many other examples but don't have the time.

They go hand in hand. It's a little bit of both. Just like food, music has a culture that both brings it and follows it. It is an expression and valued as a form of communication.

I think it's a little bit of both artists sing, rap or dance about what they see going on in the world and the world imitates what they see on TV sometimes as well, it's like the circle of life.....lol

Yeah! NEVER STOP asking that question and the myriads of smaller social questions that should be implied. At this point, economics rules both.
