Because, sadly, the average Brit is too busy getting pissed down the pub to care, and when not there, they are watching another lot of twats on big brother, or trying to be a Kate Moss, or some other useless ****, to care about what the authorities are doing.
I have tried to encourage locals in my town, including business, to hold back payment of poll tax and collecting VAT for the fu ckers, but all they say is "oh, we can't do that".
They can of course, without fear, and even where they are brought to court, lets see the courts deal with a daily increase of 800% of usual business, and what are we talking, a week till they cave in, or less.
But you are a tardy lazy fu cking lot, jaded and disinterested, even though you are getting robbed.

The absolute ridiculous tax on everything, and the way the gov't wastes public funds is what riles me, but what are you gonna do. If you raise a ruckus your branded a racist or a bigot or some other shameful name. These peaceful protests are nice in theory, but they accomplish little, and people don't have the intestinal fortitude to have a violent protest. They put restrictions on where and when you can protest, and you must give notice!! Who ever heard of that!! People are too afraid of getting hurt in any real protest. I guess the people just don't think it's that bad. They all talk the talk, but they're to sh.it scared to walk the walk. What we need is two or three hundred thousand people to decend unexpected on parliment, and when they put out there 2-300 strong riot squad, just attack with reckless abandon, crush them under the masses of people, storm parliment, show them that we are really unhapppy with their BS politics and unwavering duty to dismiss the publics opinion. Then, maybe, they might take a little notice, and nif they didn't do it again, but worse the next week, and the next after that, until they do take notice. But I highly doubt this will ever happen, for the reasons stated above.

Traffic wardens, seriously?
Unless they paint a line under your car after you parked it (that did happen once, I know), what's to complain about? You break the rules, you pay a fine. Don't want to pay the fine, don't break the rules and behave courteously to pedestrians and other road users.
Anyway, some of us do stand up for ourselves. I certainly stand up for myself...I readily engage in correspondence and discussion with my MP, MEPs and councillors, and if I think the situation I'm concerned about warrants more direct action, I'll take it.
Maybe the reason people don't bother to stand up for themselves is because so many of them don't even bother to vote. In my opinion you've got no right to complain if you didn't exercise your right to vote, you had a chance to try and change things and you didn't (general you, not trying to single anyone out.) Oh, and in my book, spoiling your ballot paper counts as a voting action, because at least you got off your **** and went to the polling station.

We do but in civilized ways unlike the french who strike if the weather isn't right.
The last big decention was the Poll Tax riots which worked. I think soon we'll riot over taxation and immigration. I'll certainly gee up some support and run riot in my home town.

beacuse US brits are just too laid back. Even more so thatn the french. We like to have a moan about something or other and then brag down the pub what 'we would do if....'
I know what you mean though. the problem is, the way that the justice system works in this stupid country is that if you have a good enough case, and your in the right, the system changes its rules to makes you the baddy. Its a stupid country and a pathetic govenrment. In a few years i will be upping and leaving this place far far away. Good Question though!

If we did not stand up for ourselves there would not be a Britain!
It is also pretty dangerous to generalize, do you really think all Brits are the same, are the Americans all the same?
One of the foundations of democracy is free speech. Now if there are enough interested parties they can bring their thoughts and views to the governmental representatives. However, if the solidarity is not available how do you want to force something?
I think the problem lies in the above and that one could maybe say that the Brits stand up and look after THEMselves, if noone else does what should one do?
I am a Brit, I stand up and look after myself, I live in Switzerland and left UK in 1979.
Why don't the Russians stand up for themselves?

We do there are protests and petitions and letter writing going on all over the place all the time it's just the media only picks the really big ones to put on the news, there are a million causes with a million different ways to tackle them so it's impossible to notice that people are fighting for all of them all of the time

Too right. I am a Canadian and we suffer from the same attitude. If politicians do something we don't like we just get pissed of and pretend they don't exist and go on. Perhaps a good cry in our beer will fix everything. I guess we just don't get mad enough or are too polite. A good riot would make everybody feel better.

Were too busy being politically correct. Do you really want a riot because of traffic wardens and counciltax. I don't think we should resort to tactics employed by the minorities and the french do you ?

I think that it's basically because, despite liking a moan about things, we realise that compared with other countries around the world we have it pretty damn good.
Our moans tend to be about speed cameras and the like which doesn't really equate with famine, civil war or crippling diseases. Most Brits remember this deep down and therefore can't protest too much about out lot.
We also have a democratic system that allows us to affect the power in the country through means other than protest.
