Some very sensible answers so far, I would add that gender makes a difference as does whether or not the cat is neutered. Both carnivores but have different kinds of cognitive ability, they are both predators so competitors rather than potential prey and one is a pack animal the other less so. The tom, if neutered, will likely be more tolerant than if not and if the dog can be established as below the cat in the pecking order of your particular pack then it should be OK. We are talking about a terrier here and they were bred to be aggressive and to kill small fury things so don't take anything for granted.
Have fun with them both if you go for it.

It might be okay, it might not. It should be fine for the dog if he is really young, but it is the cats house. I have a dog, and I had a friend with a cat stay with me for a month. For the whole month, the cat and dog were constantly fighting--and cats will always win against dogs. My suggestion is to get a friend with a dog to come over and see how the cat reacts. If the cat tries fighting with it, it's probably not a good idea. If the cat doesnt innitiate any fighting, and the dog does, it should be fine, as long as the cat doesnt try to start fighting with the dog.

Chances are that the puppy will be boisterous and the cat will find it tiresome and retaliate to its play by scratching it at first. The best way to deal with this would be to introduce them as soon as possible but gradually in order to get them used to each other. Unless there is a really bad incident or threat to either animal it is better to let them establish their own pecking orders within your household and for them to learn their own boundaries with each other. If you do this I would say that there would be no problem. We have 2 puppies under a year and this is what we did to get them used to our cat. Now everything is fine, she is boss and the puppies mostly respect that. When they get out of line, she warns them and they leave her alone.
Hope this helps

No its not a bad idea at all, when I was living at my parents we had two cats and two dogs (small dogs).
The ginger tom soon put the dogs in there place and after that it was fine no problems at all.
Quite amusing at first though watching a dog bolting out the house with a cat attached to it.

All of our clutter packing packing containers have covers, so our cats can no longer carry their butts over the side. it incredibly is a answer to messes on the floor. Him no longer masking his mess is yet another remember. we've tried to rest room prepare a pair of cats interior the previous -- it did no longer artwork too nicely. There are issues you purchase to help in that (plastic clutter holders that extra wholesome over the rest room bowl with a prgressively extra effective hollow minimize out interior the middle). .
