Loreena McKennit does a lovely version of this song, as does Sinead O'Connor.
Are you singing it acapella or with an accompanyment? If you are singing acapella, you'll have a little more flexibility, and if that's the case, memorize the melody, and then choose a pitch that is comfortable for you.
If you are singing it with an accompanyment, try to at least get a general idea of the key/pitch it will be in, so you can practise hitting any high notes.
The lovely thing about this song is that you can kind of set your own phrasing (I love that about Irish music!). Make sure you understand the lyrics and meaning of the song, and then sing it from your heart.
Consider using this form of the lyrics, which doesn't speak directly of death or tragedy:
"My young love said to me, "My mother won't mind
And my father won't slight you for your lack of kind,"
And she stepped away from me and this she did say,
"It will not be long, love, till our wedding day."
She stepped away from me, and she went thro' the fair.
And fondly I watched her move here and move there.
And then she went homeward with one star awake,
As the swan in the evening moves over the lake.
Last night she came to me, she came softly in,
So softly she came that her feet made no din.
And she laid her hand on me, and this she did say,
"It will not be long, love, till our wedding day."
You can hear a Midi of the tune here:

kinda a depressing song for a wedding. Its about a woman who dies before her wedding and comes to visit her love in the night!! Sing something happier
My young love said to me, "My mother won't mind
And my father won't slight you for your lack of kind"
And she stepped away from me and this she did say:
It will not be long, love, till our wedding day"
As she stepped away from me and she moved through the fair
And fondly I watched her move here and move there
And then she turned homeward with one star awake
Like the swan in the evening moves over the lake
The people were saying, no two e'er were wed
But one had a sorrow that never was said
And I smiled as she passed with her goods and her gear,
And that was the last that I saw of my dear.
Last night she came to me, my dead love came in
So softly she came that her feet made no din
As she laid her hand on me and this she did say
"It will not be long, love, 'til our wedding day"

It's a lovely song. Ronan keating did a nice version of it. I'd advice you to sing it kind of haunting with some nice frills at the end of the words. Frills are often used in Irish traditional music and it makes it sound very celtic. If you're brave enough I think it would sound beautiful unaccompanied by any music. Or if you want some music, the flute would be nice.
