Indentured servants were ones who wanted to go to a new land, America, Australia etc but did not have money to pay for their fare so they would indenture themselves for a period of Usually 7 years to pay off their debt and then they would be free to go about on their own. They were better off than slaves, they were treated better and there was a light at the end of the tunnel, freedom.

Somebody who is forced to be a servant for a certain number of years. They often live with the family they work for, and are treated slightly better than servants who were slaves for life. Irish and German immigrants were the most common indentured servants.

An indentured servant was a person who had debts they couldn't pay and to stay out of debtors prison they basically sold themselves in their trade to people who took them on. They were hired at almost no money per week, but they got room and board and just enough of the basics to live. Check out the history of Alexander Dumas' publishing house.
