The ku klux klan was originally founded by veteran confederate soldiers after the civil war. The original idea was to scare black people back into slavery. The hoods were supposed to make them look like ghosts. They didn't think much of black people, obviously, and thought this might work. There were some lynchings of black people, also.
Nobody's quite sure where the name comes from, but it's thought to represent the sound of loading and cocking a rifle.

Saw some of these guys on a talk tv show...they hate everyone who's not white. I guess they seldom cause trouble they used to but they are still around. I think they were raised with white parents that taught them to hate others. At least there is one thing that I agree with them about.. they are against communism.
