Does this really work? If I want to empty the jar, will the bugs come out? How do I get rid of the flies when the are in the jar? What if I still want the jar?

Another way is to take a saucer and put a mix of apple cider vinegar and a little bit of dish washing detergent in it. Th eflies are attracted to the vinegar and the detergent kills them. Just rinse off the saucer every so often and you are in business.

The fruit method is good if you do not want the flies to die. If you do not care, you can just put some apple cider vinegar in a plastic bottle (like a throw-away water bottle) or a plain glass cup, or a jar, then fold some paper into a cone and place it over the opening. The fruit flies will fly into the cone, won't be able to get out, and will probably drown themselves in the apple cider vinegar. Then, you can just dump it down the drain and rinse whatever you used if you still want to use it again.

Be aware that if you live someplace where it is cold and you use a no-kill way to lure the fruit flies (like the banana in the jar), that when you take them outside into the cold, they still won't be able to survive.

Then, make sure you throw decaying fruit away in the future, because I've found that once you have fruit flies, it takes less and less decaying fruit to get them to come back in the future. Also, if you save plastic bags from the grocery store, check those to see if some fruit juice got on them, because that little bit can keep them attracted. Good luck!

If you are talking about the tiny flies that come around after food spoils you need to buy a fruitfly bomb, its less than 10 bucks and you set it off inside the house. I think you have to exit the house for an hour or two, but it will rid your home of these things and is not poisonous.
