The electron will eventually lose energy (by releasing a photon) and drop into the lower orbital. Thus, electrons fill orbitals in the order specified by the energy sequence given above.

First, look at the table. Mg is in 2A group, all 2A elements have their last electron in ns2 (n:1,2,3,4,5,6,7). If you know the Aufbau

1s2
2s2-2p6
3s2-3p6-3d10
4s2-4p6-4d10-4f14...

You will notice that Mg has 12 protons, if it is neutral, it has 12 electrons. You do the Aufbau until you get all 12 electrons.
1s2-2s2-2p6-3s2 (2+2+6+2= 12)
Remember, Aufbau has an order: 1s2-2s2-2p6-3s2-3p6-4s2-3d10-4p6-5s2... and so on.
s is only one orbital, p has 3 (since p = 1 in the azimutal number, the magnetic numbers are -1,0,1, giving 3 orbitals and 6 electrons tops)
d has 5 orbitals, f has 7...
(↑↓)-(↑↓)-(↑↓)(↑↓)(↑↓)-(↑↓)
1s2-/-2s2-/-------2p6-------/--3s2

As you can see, all s orbitals are (↑↓), but they can be (↑_) when they are not totally filled (remember, you can only put a max. 2 electrons per orbital. P has 3 orbitals, if they are all filled:
3*2= 6 electrons. If you count all arrows, you will notice you have 12, each ones represents an electron.
One thing you should know is that is more practical to just represent through orbital diagrams valence electrons, and use a noble gas Kernel for the rest. For Mg it would be

The electron orbital diagram for Mg is: Neon, and with 2 electrons in the outer ring. In other words, 2 in the 1st ring(now it is full) 8 in the second ring (now it is full) 2 in the outer ring.Mg is in column 2. That means that it has 2 electrons in the outer ring. It is in the 3rd period, that means that it has 3 rings of electrons.

so it will have 3 shells so s,p,d and 2 electrons in the last subshell
