Sometimes checking the rating isn't always right -- I heard that they actually did a survey and found that the scariest movie of the year was actually only 14A. (What movie it was or how they found out is beyond me)
So, I think if you check the rating before seeing the movie is alright, but take special precautions. Maybe, if the kid was 12/13 and going to see a 14A movie it isn't the best thing to do. If it absolutely must happen, go with a parent or tell them to go with lots of friends. If it's 18A, don't see it unless you're at least 16 years old because the content that goes on in those movies are definitely not suitable for anyone under that age. It make not be just the gruesome horror, but there tends to be a lot of sexual acts in them, whatever kind of movie it is.
I think the only horror movie a kid would be alright to watch by themselves is PG -- if they're 12 and up.
Glad to help!

my answer on this is going to be very different from the others that have been given and thats because my answer is.....
I don't feel horror movies are good for any age child or adult to watch. Yes, I will say I used to watch them but haven't for quite a while anymore. The things we see and hear do have an effect on our minds whether people believe that or not.
its bad enough for anyone to watch let alone have our kids watching horror movies where people are murdering other people, there is gore, blood, violence, swearing, using the name of the Lord in vain, and often times nudity of some type and it is just wrong. Do the people of this country ever wonder why we have so many people killing and murdering each other? ......if you ask me its because minds become warped on what they have seen in movies. We have movies about people sawing their own legs off to get away from a mad man, we have a movie where a child molestor comes back to haunt the dreams of children, we have movies where we see the likes of jason and micheal meyers stabbing, cutting and slashing their victims to death.....is this really the kind of thing we want our children to see or be part of?
We as parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents should be gaurding the minds of our children and paying attention to what they are seeing and hearing. know what your children are watching and listening to after all we are gaurding our future and one of the most precious gifts God can ever give us.. our children.

Well it depends on the movie and the rating. But on most scary movies I would say 13 is a good age to start allowing them to watch them.

no, i think that horror movies aren't dangerous for them, it would be ok if the parents watch the movies with them, and that can give confidence to the future grownups. maybe a good age would be 8 or 9 years

at least 12 or 13 for some of the tamer stuff... and at least 17 for the more intense stuff... even over 21 for the really really bad stuff like Hills have eyes and Saw movies.

i used to watch chucky, halloween, friday the 13th, and much more ever since i can remember! but i dont get scared....i think it really depends if the kid is used to watching it....but personally i think parents should be catious on wat kind of VIDEO GAMES they play bcuz thats retarded...u wont let them watch a horror movie but u get them rated M games that teaches them how to steal, kill , and other unspeakable things...just speakin my mind here....
