I'm thinking of hiring a housekeeper. My wife suggests getting a Romanian, Polish or Russian lady (there's lots in my area ready who will work for cheap)

I was going to do this until a friend (a police officer) warned me. He said that these people will rip you off blind, that they came from ex-dictatorships, and that they would actually resent and dislike you even while smiling and working for you. Is this true???? I hate to listen to stereotypes, but I feel my duty to keep my family safe comes first...so sorry if this sounds bad.

Eastern Europeans are no more likely to rip you off than any other person who, because of their position in a foreign country, are forced to "work for cheap"
Anyone who is struggling to survive in an alien country far from the help of family and friends can be tempted under extreme circumstances when they see their employers living in great luxury and paying miserable wages for their hard work. When treated fairly most people return the compliment. Every nation, including the US has its criminals and they cannot always be avoided no matter how hard we try.

I think that really depends on the person. where i live there are also many eastern europeans and this kind of stereotypes go around a lot, but at the end, most people that need househelp, especially with old and sick people mainly hire eastern european ladys, and most of them were very content. some were complaining that these ladys were more rude and demanding then they would like (if u ask me they simply had a personality), but i havent heard of anything really bad happening. on the other hand some years ago a whole family was butchered by the philipinno helper, although phillipinos are thought to be-and are- very easy and quiet helpers. So, what i m saying is, having a stranger -not a foreigner, a stranger- in your house is some kind of risk, no matter if she is eastern european, asian, american, or local. try to judge the person in front of u by the interview. there are no really true stereotypes.
oh and about the resent and dislike part, thats your responsibilitie as well. if u pick a nice person and treat her well, dont worry. noone envies you because they were living in diktatorships. what a crap!

I work with all types of people and like the post above me there is alot of bad feelings towards these people..... One German guy used to always refer to them in a bad way as "untermensch". I had to check the 'net for the meaning of this but it basically means "subhuman" !?!? He said that they were destined from birth to be inferior in every way. whatever.

As far as trustworthy I'm not sure....But I do some horror stories about men who have taken these people for spouses...and were taken for nearly everything they had.
