Second, it conveys the "walk a mile in my shoes" theory. Meaning, once he was accepted by the local tribe after being injured, he realized that these people were doing everything they could to survive. That they did have a heart-obvious not because they took him in, but, by taking in another white person when she was a little girl whose family was shot dead and treated like family. They accepted him, too. Once he realized that these were loving, accepting people who resorted to means of "kill or be kill" by the man taking their land away, he was more terrified by his own people then of the Natives. And, he wanted to be a Native then white, towards the end.
This is what the film conveys to me.

A cavalry soldier following orders gets forgotten in a remote outpost. Because he is ordered to stay there until relieved he settles in to life there. He discovers a wild wolf that he tames and is observed by local indians who call him dances with wolves because of his activity playing with the wolf. He befriends tha indians and discovers the kindness and dignity or thier existance.
