There is no sure way to tell. just by looking out of your window at the rear. In some instances, none of the boundary fences/hedges/walls may be yours. (was the case in the house I lived at previously) Best thing to do initially is ask your neighbours on each boundary what their thoughts are. If it works out to suit you, leave it at that. If it doesn't, try to get a look at your deeds, and/or ask the local council if they can advise you.

What Rob said. There is no rule on fences any more than there is on swingballs, whirlygigs or brick barbequeues. If you bought it, carried it home from B&Q and erected it on your own land, it's as yours as your socks are yours. If the previous owner did that and included it when he/she sold you the house, same applies.
If you erected it on someone else's land, you can probably say sorry and demand your fence back (promising to fill in the holes as you go and not make a mess), but it doesn't make the land yours.
The deeds should tell you where the line is between yours and theirs.
In rare occasions a fence might be common ownership and common responsibility - my house has one like that because it was put up when the street was built 100 years ago. Neither of us can be bothered painting it. If we get round to it, we'd have to share the cost of paint.

A good way to judge is if the naff side is facing you it used to be common curticy to have the naff side facing you if you put the fence up.The other way is to ask the person if they mind you replacing it , no one would complain at this

Depends on who built it last. My parents and their neighbors take turns or split costs every so many years.. Same for side fences and neighbors.......assuming you have neighbors........otherwise, it must be all yours.
