However an official inquest determined that her death was not directly due to ecstasy consumption, but rather the large quantity of water she had consumed, apparently in observation of an advisory warning commonly given to ravers to drink water to avoid dehydration resulting from the exertion of dancing continuously for hours. Betts had been at home with friends and had not been dancing, yet consumed about 7 litres (1.85 gal.) in less than 90 minutes, resulting in water intoxication and hyponatremia (a dilution of the blood, disrupting sodium levels), which in turn led to serious swelling of the brain (cerebral edema), irreparably damaging it.

Leah Betts

Leah Betts died because she took an ecstacy tablet. thats the basic fact. The science of it is the effect of the ecstacy tablet on her. Because the ecstacy tablet triggered the production of ADH (anti-dieuretic hormone...check my spelling) in her body that stops her losing water and sends a signal to her brain that she needs water. She then consumed lots and lots of water and that triggers osmotic problems in her body (explains the painful spasms she got as her brain was swelling up very badly). Eventually her brain 'bursted' and she died sadly.

i would say the main point of this would be the effect of the ecstacy tablet on leah betts and the ADH, but most importantly, never do drugs. =)

Most Ecstasy tablets act physiologically like alcohol in many aspects: the main one is that they dehydrate your body. With alcohol, it simply makes you need to pee a bit more often, but essentially makes your body lose a little nutrience that it should've kept. This dehydration reaches to the brain also, and the enzymes in the alcohol is what causes the drunkenness.
With The tablet that Leah Betts took (Called a "Dove") this dehydration process was MUCH stronger: if you consider that alcohol lightly dehydrates the body, and give this a rating of 1, this "Dove" Ecstasy tablet that Leah took, was 140x stronger.
Therefore, when in hospital, they simply couldn;t put enough fluids back into her body, and what they could back in hardly had any effect, because her organs were practically made useless with absolutely no fluid in themselves.
It could be compared to a grape and a raisin. Add water to a grape, it'll expand. But once it's dried out, and become a raisin, you can't make it juicy like it's original grape-like form, because it's too dry. Sadly, Leah's body had this same effect.

Hope that helps. It's certainly a sad story.

You have to try and make it as evocative and poignant as possible. Consider the kind of emotions that would be going through the head of a father as his daughter lay dying. Things like worry, sadness, anger, guilt, helplessness and the nagging feeling that maybe he could have done something to prevent this. For example he may say. "Why did such a thing as this have to happen? Why did this happen to my baby girl? I thought we raised you properly and taught you the dangers of drugs. Please let her be alright, I pray, please." He might address both himself and his daughter in the monologue and there should be a clear element of nostalgia, saying things like "I remember the day you were born and we brought you home from the hospital. Holding you in my arms you were so tiny and helpless. You were reliant on me. How I wish to God I could help you now. I'm your dad and I should be able to save you but I can't do anything. Nothing at all!" The most important thing is to convey the desperation that someone in this position would be feeling, and try and make the audience identify and empathize with him through imagery and language which is extremely evocative.
