If you are talking about you own mother-in-law then I am very sorry for you. My husband and mother get along very well together. My mom respects our marriage and my husband respects my relationship with my mom. And she has never ever tried to "manipulate me to act against my husband".

I hope to goodness you mean "conniving". At any rate, perhaps you should look at the way you treat her. The poor woman is probably concerned about her daughter being stuck with a guy who takes the actions of one woman as representative of the totality of womankind. If you are just stuck with a bad mother-in-law, well, lots of people don't get along with inlaws. Out of respect for your wife, you shouldn't assume all women are like that one. Someday, your lady may end up being a mother-in-law, and it would be terrible of you to think that poorly of her.

Maybe yours does, but try not to speak in such generalities, because your statement will always be false. Not all women are "conniving," and not all mother in laws want to make a man's life hell. My mom LOVES my husband, (sometimes I wonder if she likes him more than ME! LOL.) My mom DOESN'T like my sister's husband, but then he can't keep a job, and talks down to his wife. So, it's all relative. (Get it? HA!)

Maybe it is because everyone expects them to be. If all mother-in-laws are horrible, then that daughter will be horrible one day too. I think it is the perception of them, not their actual behavior.

Women are good at what they do. Nuff said.
Tell your mother in law to mess up someone else's life.
Or, get rid of your wife. She obviously has no backbone. She seems to have forgotten the 'forsaking all others' clause in the vows.

Well, Sleazy P. Martini, I can't imagine why any mother wouldn't be thrilled to have you as a son in law.
That aside, what makes you so sure that your experience is universal? Also, consider that wives have mothers-in-law too, they don't exist just to pester men...

Kniving? You mean with kitchenware?
I think some of them still believe that their place is in the kitchen.
It is a shame they don't reject such patriarchial views.
