I don't know how to let go...it's not in my character to walk away from someone who is obviously so ill.

Um.....Jesus called. He says he wants his cross back.

You will never earn the love of a narcissist. Period. No matter how hard you try, how many excuses you make for their selfishness, no matter how patient, thoughtful, caring, and no matter how much you love them. It is impossible. For the narcissist, the world revolves around them, should cater to them, and they are unable (unwilling) to look beyond their own perspective. You may as well buy shoes that are three sizes too small for you and work on trying to make them fit you.....

Maybe you get off on the challenge of trying to fix and change people. Do you realize how much of this behavior is at your expense? Are you a chronic people-pleaser (pushover)? Do you lack assertiveness? Are you emotionally needy and desperate? Are you easily manipulated? Do you feel responsible for the feellings of other people? Do you have a savior complex? Do you have a martyr complex? Maybe you should ask yourself these questions.

That sounds very well meaning. So well meaning that I have to ask you- does it make you feel good to be so compassionate? If so, it's misplaced.
Please don't play the martyr. Respect yourself, and give the best of yourself to those who will deserve it.
It doesn't mean more because he's less, you know?

I have a narcissistic step brother.....he is !
You will lose yourself and they will beat down your self esteem until you have none left. GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN and don't worry about them cause they have themselves to love and they don't need you!
