You should have asked Maury when you were there. Seriously, contact an attorney who specializes in such cases.

I'm assuming that you acknowledged the child as yours on the birth certificate, signed a Voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity with the Department of Human Services, or admitted that you were the father at the child support hearing. Otherwise, a child support order could not have been issued. If any of those are true, I would say that your chances are extremely slim of bastardizing the child you have been paying support for. The courts in Tennessee rarely reverse a finding of parentage. The only shot you have is to file a petition to set aside voluntary acknowledgement of paternity if you can somehow show that the mother committed some sort of extrinsic fraud upon you. That is a very difficult thing to show. Good luck.

I'd consult an attorney - a really good one. What about the child, do you have a relationship or have you just been sending money? I can understand you not wanting to pay for a kid that isn't yours but this child has believed that you are his/her dad for 14 years as have you. If you've done nothing but send a check every month, shame on you. If you've been a dad to this child, you need to realize how devastating this news must be to this poor kid and not make things any tougher. Obviously, this kid's Mom is a piece of work and has presented enough challenges of her own.

Depends. If you signed the birth certificate you will most likely have to continue the support. If you didn't sign and can prove that you are not the father and want nothing to do with te child from here on out you can get out of paying.

Hire yourself a family law lawyer and most likely you'll have to petition the court to stop child support. Also ask the lawyer what you have to do to get your name taken off the birth certificate. Unless you have legally adopted the child you should not be responsible for child support for a child who is not biologically yours. A family law lawyer will be able to help you out legally in this situation.

WOW! I think if you felt really angry about it and didn't want to be nice you could even sue for your past child support back... at least I think you should be able to!!

Don't see how they can force you to keep paying for it but do you care if the kid you thought was yours (or maybe *you* didnt) is cared for properly?

How long have you acted as father?

That might factor into it.

What kind of relationship do you have with the child? If you're close do you really want to quit now?

Yes you can. If you are listed on the birth certificate as the father than I am sorry to say that you are responsible until she is 18

nope. not your kid. The real father will have to pay, it could be likely that the state will force the real father to reimburse you, depending on the laws, I am not sure that will happen.
