By reinstalling windows xp on your machine. There is no free software that will be able to get rid of all viruses and trojans

Google the name of the virus and you will probably find instructions for manually removing it. Usually involves deleting all infected files, the virus program files, and editing the registry. Average time for such a removal is 3-5 hours. One mistake and you could corrupt Windows and keep it from running. Plus you would have to reinstall any programs for which you delete the exe files.
Or, you can download and run a free virus scanner like AVG or Avast, and the also download and run a free spyware remover like Ad-aware or Skybot Seek and Destory. Run both types and programs and usually in under an hour you will be cleaned and ready to continue computering - this time with protection against future infections. And no danger of damaging your PC.
If you really want to do it by hand, and can not find removal instructions, repost with the viruses name. Each one is different.

without software??! You gotta put something on there. Try enabling the Windows XP Firewall, then download a virus program. I recommend Ad-Aware SE or Spyware Terminator. I think you'd be best off with real-time protection.
