You shouldn't offer to tutor someone if you dont understand it. I understand you were trying to be nice and all but the nice and realistic way would have been for you to say, "I am sorry.. I'd like to help you but I dont even know myself."

If you were being nice, you would be honest with that person and let them know that you are not familiar with the subject that they need help with. You could help them by finding someone who does know the subject.
