The easiest and the only way for all this is to make the denominator equal if you remember to take the least common factor...

The only common factor for 10 and 8 is 80. While making the denominator common we have to multiply the numerator also by the same number.

Thus,
[(7 x 8) / (10 x 8)] - [(7 x 10) / (8 x 10)]
[56 / 80 ] - [70 / 80]

Since the enominators are same we can equate the numerators like,

[56-70] / 80
-14 / 80

take LCM of 10 and 8 which is 40
then multiply and divide with the no. of which it is divisible with
(7*4 - 7*5)/40
(28-35)/40=-7/40

(7 / 10) - (7 / 8) = -0.175

OR
find a common denominator. Lets try 80
7/10 = 56/80
7/8 = 70/80

then subtract
56/80 - 70/80 = -14/80
reduce
-7/40
