Going out to see the Christmas lights

2006-11-01 09:25:14 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

We don't have a dinner on Christmas eve. We start snacking about five in the afternoon until we got to bed. Everybody has a favourite finger food, ex. mine is cheese sticks, Mom's is shortbread, Dad like some type of stinky fish stuff, etc. We usually eat way to much but, we still do it every year. On Christmas morning our tradition is Stockings. No matter what age or how many are here we have to have them. Merry Christmas. Little comment to some of the other people who have answered this question I love some of the traditions y'all have listed. Nice to see people having fun.

At Thanksgiving we all draw names. The gift must not cost more than $20.00. At our Christmas 'get-together' we exchange the gifts but only after a great meal where everyone brings something to eat - sort of like pot luck. One year, while my oldest sister was still alive, we had our Christmas at a Rec. hall. The hall didn't have a Christmas tree so she decorated a support beam; with lights, tree boughs and ornaments; she called it 'a Charlie Brown' tree.

Reading the story of the birth of Jesus from the gospel of Luke, while eating cinnamon rolls and drinking orange juice. This is done before any presents are opened to keep our perspective on what we are truly celebrating. It is special, with all the candles lit, soft Christmas music playing in the background, everyone all snug in their jammies and robes all sitting around a beautiful Christmas tree. It is a wonderful feeling. Jesus said, "Where two or more are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them" so by doing this first, His presence comes before the presents.

On Christmas Eve we put out 1 present for our kids and then 1 present that is shared. While they are upstairs or out of view we place those on the table then one of us will ring the doorbell and hurry to get away from it. Our girls will come running in to see who it was and we tell them that Santa has come by real quick to give them an early present. They unwrap the one to themselves to find a brand new nightgown and then unwrap the other together and find a movie. They then will go take their showers, put their new nightgowns on and come downstairs to watch the movie. In the mean time I will be making them some hot chocolate and some cookies. The girls, my husband, and myself will all sit together and watch the movie with them before bed time. I love my children going to bed in brand new night clothes and waking up to everything being brand new.

Gag gifts, White Elephant gifts, or whatever you call it.
After everyone has opened up their presents, we draw #s and everyone opens up a gift someone else brought and no one knows what is inside. Before you open it, though, you can switch with anyone who has opened one if you want and they have to open the one you picked. The person who piced #1 can pick from all the gifts at the end since they didn't have a choice but to open the gift they picked up.

We volunteer on the cleansing soap kitchen and then all of us pass homestead and talk. We used to pass to the candle mild provider, yet we stopped doing that some years returned. My brother and his spouse spend the night and then on Christmas morning all of us awaken and open provides after my mom does this great emotional re-telling of the Christmas tale or something else sappy... then we eat breakfast.
