HP are some of the best printers out there they have been rated with an A/A+ for 14 or 15 consecutive years by PC Magazine. I've own 4 HP printers and 2 of them are over 5 years old and the only reason I needed the other 2 is because one is a all-in-one and the other is a photosmart. I've worked as a technology sales person for 3 years and my customer have never been happier with a printer then when I sale them an HP. As far as other companies; Lexmark (Dell are also Lexmark) the ink cartridges are extremely expensive and most people just buy a new bottom of the line lexmark instead of buying new cartridges, also when you buy lexmark printer they come with partically filled cartridges. Epson's are the worst printers I've dealt with, they drive me up the wall everytime I've had to deal with them. There not user friendly at all. Brothers are the biggest waste of money over they use 4 ink cartridges and you can't even use all the ink, when they tell you that there running out of ink you have to replace the ink before they'll allow you to print again. Cannons are okay, however, Cannons, Epsons, and Brothers all have there printheads built into the printer and if those get clogged you'll be looking for another new printer. HPs and Lexmarks printheads are built onto the ink cartridge so there replaced everytime you change the ink.
Recommendation in order:
1) HP
2) Cannon
3) Epson
4) Lexmark
5) Brother

Here's one thats a steal!!!! As the major cost of printing is not the printer, but the ink, I have used Continuous Ink for the last year, its great. You save 90% on the cost of ink. This printer and the system with it is a steal!

Kodak printers are OK and their ink is half the price of anyone elses. But they cost a little more to buy.

I can tell you to stay away from anything with the HP name on it. They have a huge problem with their software glitching with Microsoft Windows. I've seen it happen time and time again.

You should also know that they are dating their ink cartridges which means even if the cartridge has ink in it, when it hits the expiration date the printer won't print. They are also developing ways to counteract people from refilling cartridges.

Lexmark printers are fairly basic but not bad. It all depends one what you need. If you need to print good quality pictures, a basic Lexmark like I have is not good. I like HP Printers a lot, they're cheap and they work excellent.

go with Dell..I have lexmark, HP, canon and dell. I have spent up to $600 on HP before and they last for abt 3 years but toner is very expensive. The Lexmark dont last more than 6 months and the canon are very tempermental.

Def go with a Dell, even a cheaper one will last long and the toner is affordable

Only advice I can give you is to make sure you check the cost of the ink replacements (or toner)...some times inexpensive printers aren't worth it when the toner or ink runs out (can cost more than the printer).

I've had a few printers (Epson, H.P. and Canon) and can tell you that the Epson CX3200 I now own is by far the best I have ever used.
