I have a powerful G5 and strong (broadband) internet connection. I've never been able to get it to work well. It indicates that it will take 50-100 days to download simple files.

What could I be doing wrong?

Your download speed in BitTorrent/BitComet, or any other P2P (Peer-2-Peer) application for that matter, relies on the upload speed of others - so do not assume that because you get xxKB/s when downloading from web sites that you will always get xxKB/s with BitComet. Slow download speeds are almost always because the upload bandwidth required to provide you with fast downloads just isn't there... so there is no way to magically speed it up, other than going out and buying everyone who you're downloading from (seeds/peers) a faster internet connection. Other than that there is ways to speed up the connections a little to find out how go here: http://www.p2pforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=99434#99434

An internet connection can become slow or stop working due to a number of reasons depending on the type of the connection. Many of the problems can be solved by making software changes or small hardware corrections. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yl62gz

if your behind a router, go to www.portforward.com and follow the tutorials for the specific router. i think the site uses utorrent but you can use the same info for diff bt clients.

in general, make sure that the port your bt client uses is forwarded/open in your router/firewall. Also limit your upload speed to 80% of its capability.

then try a well seeded torrent and see if you get better speeds. remember that speeds do depend on amount of peers and their upload capacity.

What torrent application are you using? You probably need to specify on your router which ports you are using.
