If Kerry wasn't directing his "joke" to troops, why did he apologize to them, and why did Democrats demand him to apologize to the troops?

One thing about Kerry I don't understand is this: He was a vietnam veteran, and proudly served his country! Seems to me like he would want to support our troops sense he was once a soldier himself!

First, you are forgetting Kerry has valiently served in the military, unlike the current president.
The pope also created quite a stir and his comments led to riots and he apologized do you hold him to the same standards as Kerry?
This is still America we have freedom of speech including the right to say things that are unpopular or go against the current political administration, goals, wars etc.
