Take Least common factor of the denominators.

That will give,

[(5 x 4) + (1 x 6)] / (6 x 4)
= [20 + 6] / 24
= 26 / 24

When I was in 6th grade this is where I used to leave out y answers. I am not sure how you want the final answer to be. Which kind of fraction I mean. I hope this will help you enough.

anser: 13/12
how to get answer: first find a common denomnator which is 12. 6 times two equals 12 so mutliply 5 by 2. 4 times 3 equals 12 of multiply 1 by 3. 10=3=13 so it's 13/12.

Unfortunately, I know 12th graders who couldn't do this . . . shivers down my spine!

First, find a common denominator between 6 and 4; when you add or subtract fractions, all fractions must have a common denominator.

6 X 2 = 12 = 3 X 4

Multiplu top numbers (numerators) the same way you multiply bottom numbers (denominators).

5 (x 2) = 10 1 (x 3) = 3
--------------- + -------------
6 (x 2) = 12 4 (x 3) = 12

10/12 + 3/12 = 10 + 3/12 = 13/12 = 1 1/12 (re: one and one-twelfth or thirteen twelfths)

5/6 + 1/4 =
now get your common denomonator (which will be 12)

10/12 + 3/12 = 13/12 = 1 1/12
