Kerry is being accused of saying the troops are stupid.

In truth he was talking about Bush and he commented that if a person studies hard he might not get stuck in Iraq.(not exact words, but close enough without looking them up) Such as Bush is stuck right now. It was very funny.

Why are the republicans taking that one sentence out the the context of the conversation? Are they trying to prove how horrid of people they are?

To Jim, Tell me why do you think he would break off of his berating of Bush and out of the blue say one line that has nothing to do with the rest of the conversation? That is what you are claiming.

He was talking about Bush when he said it.

First, why don't you just link to the ACTUAL video and see exactly what he said. There was nothing in his statement that referenced Bush.

Yes, he was making a joke. He was also insulting the military at the same time, probably without realizing it.

And he's compounding the problem by not apologizing. Come on, all you liberals keep harping on Bush for not admitting his mistakes and apologizing. How many times did Trent Lott have to apologize for this thoughtless comment at Strom Thurmond's birthday party? And even still that wasn't enough. His resignation as Majority Leader was the price. Why doesn't that apply to your own liberal leaders? Why are Republican's held to a different standard by you liberals?

Update: It's now being reported that Kerry has apologized. "I sincerely regret that my words were misinterpreted to wrongly imply anything negative about those in uniform and I personally apologize to any service member, family member or American who was offended," Kerry said in a statement.

Even his apology is weasily. His words were "misinterpreted." Rather than take responsibility, he's blaming our interpretations.

All Kerry had to say was, "I'm sorry. I was trying to emphasize the importance of getting a good education, and I made a mistake by telling a bad joke at the expense of our well educated fighting men and women, using an outdated notion of the military being the last refuge for those unable to find work elsehwere. To all of those in our armed forces, I apologize for giving offense. It was not intended."

Thank God he's on your team!

To say that Kerry's comments to high school students having to choose between working hard in school and being successful or not doing so and being a soldier overseas in the military, was aimed at Bush is complete bollox!

He knew EXACTLY what he was saying and neither Bush nor his policy had anything to do with it. The message was simple, flunk out of school or scrape by and you'll end up in the army probably to serve in an unpopular war PERIOD! He said it and without a smile on his face or even a chuckle in his voice. He MEANT EVERY WORD OF IT!

How'd you get your head so far out of the sand so you could type this question? Does your liberal bias blind you to the truth? Kerry specifically and categorically stated that if you did well in school, studied and worked hard you would get ahead or you would get "stuck in Iraq." This statement interprets tha only the stupid or less educated go into the military and is an insult to every veteran and serving member.

WHY?!?! Why try to justify Kerry's comments? He probably did not intend them to come out the way it did, but it did indeed imply that by studying hard (aka become smart) you wouldn't have to serve in the military and get stuck in Iraq!

There are plenty of servicemen & women that are highly educated! Some of our military academies and colleges are noted as being some of the most academically challenging.

I personally graduated as president of my college's honor society and I served 4 years Army, then 4 years Air Force, despite having offers in the civilian market. Many of us join out of pride for our country and a yearning to contribute back to our society for being blessed with opportunities that come with democracy and civil liberties. That is why we find Kerry's comments insulting!

What a joke...Kerry does this all the time. His education record is worse than the Presidents. You know the guy is not a genius, except in getting rich ladies the marry the bastard.
He's a Sagittarius, my best friend is too, and they both choke on the foot in their mouth at times.

Rove couldn't come up with anything to polarize the people and win the election. They were desperately trying to find something. Then came a vague joke from Kerry. They were able to not only take it out of context, but actually convince people that the ones who got the joke were the ones taking it out of context. Rove is a genius.

If Republicans have made any mis-statements about what Kerry said, it is news to me. Kerry's words are a matter of record, and were definitely in poor taste. It was appropriate for Kerry to apologize, and he has now done so.

Karma (re. Trent Lott)?

I'm glad that you are able to divine what Kerry was meaning (even though it took him most of the day to determine it himself).

I listen the the words in context and it is clear to me that he was telling the students to study hard so they won't end up in Iraq (as was the case when he was in their shoes and the draft was in place).

My diving rod says that it was a poor attempt to bond with his audience (a standard speaker's technique) in order to make them more receptive to ideas he would present later.

A better question would be Will the Democrats ever tell the truth about anything!
Mr. Kerry lied in 1971 before congress about the military in Nam so why is it any different about him lying about them now?

... This is an easy one... the Republicans tell lies because that is all they know... they always lie. For a party that claims to be so religious, it is amazing how very easy lying comes to them... I am glad I will have a clear conscience when I face my Maker.. many, many of them, including the president will not be so lucky.

Just think, if the cons had been this upset about Bush lying about WMD's it might have actually meant something.
