Here is what you might do to keep pics and make your PC fast again. I am assuming you are running Windows XP....

1) Download AVG virus scan. I have forgotten the website but Googling 'AVG download' should bring it up. Once it is installed run it. This could take a while. Then follow the instructions on your screen to remove any viri.

2) Download Adaware. Again, I forget the website but just Google 'adaware download'. Once installed, run it (perform a full system scan the first time). Follow the instructions on the screen to remove any spyware.

Both AVG and Adaware will prompt you to purchase the full version. You don't need them.

Once both have ran go to Start->Settings-> Control Panel->Admin Tools->Computer Management. From there, doouble click on 'disk de-fragmenter on the left. Click analyze, and once it is done. Defragment. This can take a loooong time.

All told it will occupy most of your evening, especially if you have not done it before. Once it is done though you should see some performance improvement. These utilities can be set to run themselves on a weekly basis which will keep your PC in good shape.

Good luck!

At this point the simplest and first troubleshooting answer is to download a free LiveCDrom that you simply boot with it in the CD.

It will spin up the system, report all hardware malfunctions, and open up a wonderful desktop, with 1900 free games and programs.

That will mean the trouble is NOT with your hardware, but, with your software and Operating System! At that time, you may open the hard drive by clicking on the hard drive icon, and save the personal files over to a external USB stick, or external drive, or even to a CD or DVD in a burner.

Then, you will have rescued your files, and you can do a complete install of what ever system you desire, and to install this, you click on the INSTALL icon!

It will bring up a program to install and to wipe your hard drive clean of all the "114,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions"!

Lots of advice and guidance are there in the docs, on the screen, and at the website, and the forums...

Microsoft runs all their 45,000 computers for Microsoft.com, MSN.com, and Hotmail.com, and the Redmond Corporate Campus, and the Systems Labs, and the Firewalls, and the routers on Linux.

Linux is virus proof, upto 50X faster, and is FREE! The shareholders are thrilled!

You should check for the obvious cuplrits: viruses, malware, and spyware. Don't do a Restore as it will probably not get you all the way back to square one if you have had the computer for a while. Do you have a firewall? My suggestions: run Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware (free version), Avast! (free version) {or AVG}, and get ZoneAlarm (free version) or any firewall (even Windows'). Don't run all of them at the same time!!! Do a disk cleanup and a defragmentation. They are located under the "Accessories" on the "All Programs" under the Start menu.
