Me and my husband are newly married and moved and don't have as much money as we'd like to spend on family for xmas. I want to do baked cookies but my coworkers don't think it's a good idea. Need confirmation on if I should or shouldnt

ABSOLUTELY !!! and you can even give the dough, wrapped decoratively and ready for the freezer so the recipient can bake later when they desire cookies AFTER the holidays!!!

yes. Even better is a homemade batter mix with a ribbon and card with preparation instructions. Anything homemade makes a great gift to a giftworthy person.

There is nothing wrong in giving baked goods to your family for christmas. Its better than giving something they can't or won't use.
