Venus In Furs?

Have just been reading Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's book Venus in Furs. I'm just wondering, where is it set. I know Wanda and her 'slave' Severin go to Italy, but where have they come from?
What did other people think of it?

I believe they are Austrian.

Never read it myself, but it sounds pretty kinky, and I'm all for that...
