my boyfriend only has a first and last name no middle name....i don't really mind our son having his name i just want to add a middle name but that would take away from the jr aspect of it. . .he told me at one point that i could name him the way i wanted but when i told him the name he acted like he never said that and went back to the jr thing. How can we both be happy?? any suggestions?

Hi,
make dad's name your son's middle name and then choose him his own first name.
Congratulations on your new baby son!

I'm not a fan of Jr's. I think each kid deserves his own name. And not to be a negative Nellie, but you guys aren't even married. How are you going to feel about the child's name if in 2 years the boy friend leaves & you're still calling the child "Tommy, Jr", or whatever.
Explain that you'd like a middle name and how it's important to you and for the child. I don't know. But legally, it's the mom who gets to ultimately decide on the childs name, not the dad.
See if the father will compromise so he feels included, too. If not, just name him whatever you want.
ACTUALLY...now that I think about it, the boyfriend can legally change his own name too. Why don't you have him change his name to include a middle name you both like. Then when the baby is born, you can give him dad's name WITH the middle name AND he can still be a junior.
There you go - problem solved!

Another way to compromise, add a first name, basically use his firstname as a middlename. I hate the "jr" thing.. give the boy some individuality!!!

Um, this is tough, I fought with my husband to actually name our son after him, but in the end...I conceded. We both agreed on something else. Maybe give him some reasons why it is a bad idea for the little guy to have his exact name...like mix ups on insurance/credit companies...or when the little guy starts getting into trouble, he might be able to use daddies credit card!! Good luck!!

Tell him if he wants a Jr. then he needs to marry you. Otherwise it won't be a Jr. if you use your last name, which is just my opinion to do.

Add a middle name and call him a junior anyway.
