Hi Karen
5(w+3)+3(w+1)=14
● Step 1
5(w+3) =
(5 * w ) + ( 5 * 3 ) =
5w + 15
● Step 2
3(w+1) =
( 3 * w ) + (3 * 1) =
3w +3
● Step 3
5w + 15 + 3w +3 = 14
( 5w + 3w ) = 14 - 15 - 3
8w = -1 -3
8w = -4
w = - 4 / 8
w = -1/2 Or - 0.5
Good Luck dear ♣

You've asked several of these questions... what about the method can I help you with? I don't want to keep giving you the answers.
You need to distribute first:
So 5(w + 3) becomes 5w + 15
Similarly 3(w + 1) becomes 3w + 3
Adding these together you have 8w + 18 which equals 14.
8w + 18 = 14
Now you want to get w by itself, so subtract 18 from both sides. This will get you:
8w + 18 - 18 = 14 - 18
8w = -4
Finally divide both sides by 8 to get w by itself...
w = -4 / 8
Reduce the fraction:
w = -1/2
How about you try the next one and ask us to check your work???

5(w + 3) + 3(w + 1) = 14
5w + 15 + 3w + 3 = 14
8w + 18 = 14 (Subtract 18 from both sides)
8w = -4 (Divide both sides by 8)
w = -1/2
Check:
5(-0.5 + 3) + 3(-0.5 + 1) = 14
5(2.5) + 3(0.5) = 14
12.5 + 1.5 = 14
14 = 14

first distribute to get...
5w + 15 + 3w +3 = 14
then combine like terms to get....
8w + 18 = 14
then subtract 18 on both sides to get....
8w=-4
and then finally divide both sides by 8 to get...
w = -1/2
