For image files(.img):
If the file is bitmap(.bmp), Jpeg(.jpg/.jpeg) or other: Make the file into a GIF(.gif) file.
Instructions:All you need is your picture, and a simple image editor--such as Paint. Open the file into the program. Then Select 'Save As'. Below the name of the file, choose .gif, and save.

If the file is a executable(.exe): If you own WinRar/WinZIP(more common than WinRar), please follow the given instructions to create a .rar/.zip file.

Compressing Wave(.wav): A nice simple program to use is a program called Audacity at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/. Import either the raw file or the music file itself onto it. If you find that it is not working, you can record the COMPUTER's sound, while playing the sound file. After getting the data into Audacity, simply select 'Save As' and save it in the wanted directory. It will automatically save as a MP3(.mp3) file.

Files contain data, you can't just trim the file, it'd be like cutting off the lower half of a letter because it doesn't fit into the envelope. Having said that, there are programs that use compression algorythms to shrink the size of a file. A good program that's free is Filzip at: http://www.filzip.com/

The software is used for compression. It's done by using preset algorithms that detect redundancy and is able to typically make the file much more compressed. Therefore some files are much more compressible (txt) than others (pdf), resulting in more or less file size change.

More efficient field & record definitions. Binary vs text representation of numbers. Data compression.

For compression in your programs, maybe take a look at the zlib library: http://www.zlib.net/
