The mucus plug does have to be lost before you go into labor. It is what hold things together and closed. If you do lose it can be all at once or bit by bit, It doesn't have to be a certain odor, but can be bright yellow. If you notice a really think mucous like subsatnce than it probablly is your mucus plug you could be having your baby within 2 weeks.

You lose your mucus plug over a week. It doesn't all come out at once. And yes, you need to lose your mucous plug in order for your water to break but just because you may have lost it doesn't mean your water WILL break. I lost my mucous plug and my water never broke. The doctor broke it at the hospital. They say about 50% of women have there water broke at the hospital.
The mucous plug is a really thick gooey whitish color. It might be a light yellow but more white then yellow.
It doesn't really smell.
Hope this has helped you out. Usually you wont lose your mucus plug until your around the 37 week on.

No you do not have to lose your mucus plus plug for your water to break or to go into labor. When I lost mine I lost it all at once both times. With my son I never lost it.

I never lost my mucus plug....well, i'm sure I must have but I never noticed it the whole time. I'm glad I didn't because I hear it's pretty disgusting. I say, don't bother looking for it, labor will come when it's time.
