Marketing creates an artificial demand for things that people do not need to enjoy their lives and instils a culture of greed that breeds nations of selfish people prepared to fight resource wars, it creates ghettos of have nots who cannot purchase the latest marketed commodity and produces mountains of waste that is destroying the planet. So why does advertising and marketing exist and its reason for being?

You can't blame all of that on marketing, you are saying that people are completly passive to marketing and have no free will or intellengence to reject the image / product being given to them. Marketing also exsists within charitable organisations / religion / political parties, so it is merly a tool to promote a message to as many possible in the most positive / memorable and thought provocking way possible.

Marketing is a tool. Can you blame the knife if you cut yourself?

Marketing can be useful in helping not just charities but small business. I am from Ireland where the majority of businesses are small. They use marketing to compete with others and to let people know what they have. Creating employment and a living for many people.

One of the first rules of marketing is never put the cart before the horse. Meaning marketing doesn't create demand, it searches for it and supplies for it. Also, not meaning to be confrontational, who are you to say what someone's needs are to enjoy their life. Do you need a computer or internet access to enjoy life?

Advertising is a tool of marketing and marketing is a tool of man, not just big business but charities and smaller business. It makes people aware of what is available and gives countless people a living, whether it be advertiser, graphic artists, publishers and in Ireland helps pay for free newspapers.

Marketing and advertising has been around for centuries, it is just now it has defined parametres. Your questions should really be, what is the cause of a consumer driven society. Or why do some abuse this tool?

Remember you cannot blame the knife only its wielder.

Not all marketing does that. Much of it comes down to human greed. BUT - should we really point the 'finger' at all of the financial institutions who push more and more credit under noses and allow people to get into debt purchasing such things that you mention above.

(And don't forget - charities have to be marketed).

Milk does a body good is the lie of the century.

I can't tell you how many illnesses come from America's obsession with milk.

I don't like marketing. I think its purpose is create a false reality, with false needs.. I don't think is honest and I think it complicates things.

No, but it is symptomatic of something that HAS contributed to much of the ill in our society today, and that is a tolerance of lying.

To make money for Americans, of course.

That is the only reason we are still alive. If they couldn't take our money any more, they'd bomb us. You do know that, right?
